Tuesday evening in Manchester - the world stood still, is Sir Alex Ferguson leaving the helm, at will?  According to The Telegraph the Scottish manager is reportedly considering his future with Manchester United after 26 stunning years with the Red Devils.  Arguably one of the greatest managers all time, Fergie may be on his way towards retirement.  If this is to be true, now the questions will quickly arise whom will be his successor - could it be Jose Mourinho’s?

Although no official statement has been released on whether or not Sir Alex will step down after a trophy filled managerial career, indications point that a decision could be soon.  Sources say that the 71-year-old could make an announcement as soon as this week, which would come right before United’s Premier League match against Swansea City at Old Trafford.

The reports of a pending retirement come right after the Scot told reporters before the Chelsea match last Sunday “I certainly don’t have any plans at the moment to walk away from what I believe will be something special.”

26 years in charge of a football club is impressive just about anywhere, but to be so successful year in and year out - is certainly something special.  Talks of Fergie walking out of Old Trafford on his own may come to a complete surprise as many would think the Scot would remain with the fabled club until his the very last moments.

Set to undergo hip surgery in August which will likely see Sir Alex missing a few matches as he recovers could factor into his decision.  After having surgery back in 2004 as he was fitted with a pacemaker, some would have even thought it be right for him to call it quits then.  Yet, a decade later - Sir Alex continues to impress with his managerial prowess and knowledge of football.

That being said, if Sir Alex Ferguson really believes his managerial career has come to an end, we give credit where credit was due.  Ferguson has the possibility of leaving the beautiful game on a high - reclaiming the Premier League crown, a record 20th for the club.  However, after being ousted from the Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup action this season - he may have a little glimmer of hope left in his eye to see out his career just a little longer, and give European glory another go.
