Mario Goetze’s Move to Bayern Munich from Dortmund Confirmed

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Goetze will be moving to archrivals Bayern Munich in the summer according to an official statement released by the club. The 20-year-old has been regarded as one of the best young midfielders in the world. He joined Dortmund as an eight-year-old, and Dortmund fans have celebrated him. Now, it remains to be seen if Dortmund fans will turn their back on him in the remainder of the season.

There were no negotiations between Dortmund and Bayern Munich, as the latter were willing to match the release clause – €37 million – in the player’s contract. This news comes as a shock for most Dortmund fans, who were expecting Goetze to join either Arsenal or Manchester City. He had been linked with a move to the Premier League for around £25 million.

Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has said that he is extremely disappointed with the decision of the player, but he was aware of the fact that the club could do little to prevent the move. Goetze is expected to be part of the Dortmund team that will take on Real Madrid in the semifinals of the Champions League on Wednesday night. The reception for the 20-year-old could be extremely hostile, as he makes his home appearance just a few days after this announcement.

Dortmund, though, have requested the fans to continue supporting Goetze as long as he is their player. After making it into the semifinals in the unlikeliest of manners, Dortmund are just two matches away from reaching the final of the competition, but this news could disrupt their hopes in a big way.

Goetze leaves Dortmund after having lifted two league titles in the last two years. He is an attacking midfielder who is extremely lethal playing just behind the striker, while he can also play on the wings as well.
