Manchester United Sign Uruguayan Right-Back Guillermo Varela

David Moyes has finalized the first signing of his Manchester United career with the purchase of Uruguayan right-back, Guillermo Varela.

The fee is estimated at £2.5 million, with 30% of that fee suspected to go to the player’s agent. An extra £800,000 is dependent on appearances.

The 20-year-old starlet has only made one first-team appearance for his native side Atletico Penarol, but impressed Manchester United scouts during the South American Under-20s Championship earlier this year.

Penarol manager Jorge Da Silva was excited for the youngster, but disappointed to see him leave, “This is what he deserves. It is a shame to see him go but you can’t deny him the opportunity to join a club like this.” (quotes via manutd.com)

Varela recently completed a trial with Manchester United and was positive about his experience, “I have trained with the first-team. I am very happy and I was received very well. It was a surprise to get the chance to test myself with Manchester United. I’m glad and happy, and grateful to Penarol who allowed me to travel. I was treated so well and Chicharito helped me a lot.”

Varela, originally from Montevideo, is an ambitious full back with a lot of pace. He will now challenge Brazilian Rafael da Silva for a starting place on the right flank.

Varela is expected to travel to Turkey to represent Uruguay at the World Under-20 Championships, which are set to start on June 21. He will then link up with the United squad following the tournament.

Many didn’t see a relatively unknown right-back as Moyes’ first signing, did you?
