On Wednesday, Chelsea will host Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge in a vital match for both sides. A win for Chelsea could bring them that much closer to second place, while Tottenham could rise to fourth place and a subsequent UEFA Champions League qualifying spot should they get the full three points.

Of the sides’ past six matches, dating back to 2010, Tottenham have not fared well, losing three matches with the other three ending in draws. With Arsenal — the Premier League’s current fourth-placed side — in good form of late, Tottenham will need a result against Chelsea in order to boost their Champions League hopes. Not only would a UCL place bring more acclaim to the side, it could help the White Hart Lane outfit retain superstar Gareth Bale, who has been linked to Real Madrid and Manchester United. Bale would undoubtedly be more inclined to stay at Spurs should the side qualify for Europe’s premier club tournament.

Chelsea are coming off a win against champions Manchester United in a game that produced the requisite drama expected from a clash of two titans of English football. The Blues are still struggling to get goals from the striker position with both Fernando Torres and Demba Ba combining for just nine goals in 35 starts, leading to speculation that either Romelu Lukaku could be brought back to lead the line next season or owner Roman Abramovich will dip into his steep bank account and sign a world-class striker. This will be Chelsea’s third match in seven days, so expect manager Rafa Benitez to rotate the squad in order to ensure the players are fresh.

Here are a couple players to keep your eye on when two of England’s top sides do battle this Wednesday evening.
