Chelsea finished the season in third place on 75 points after a 2-1 at home win against Everton thanks to goals from Fernando Torres and Juan Mata.

With a season that saw automatic Champions League qualification as well as an Europa League title in the books, the focus now moves to improving for next season and the long speculated changes that could be coming.

Outgoing interim manager Rafa Benitez thinks that the new manager will have an easier time than he did thanks to the progress they’ve made with young players this year.

Benitez said on the Chelsea website,

“The team is now much better and the new manager will have an easier task because he will have more quality and experience, and he will start pre-season…With young players we say it is a team in transition with people like Mata, Oscar, Hazard, Marin, Moses. They are new players and they are doing well.  They will be even better next year so if you talk about players like Oscar, Hazard, Mata – the three amigos are getting better every day so that will be good. (Fernando) Torres is also stronger.”Chelsea are a team that always strengthen during transfer windows, and they spent crazy money when Jose Mourinho first arrived. With Mourinho reported to return to West London, they could splash a little more than they otherwise would. Benitez has already stated Chelsea will be much better next season because they will spend €100 million and they will sign three or four players,” Benitez said. “The foundation is already there. The future is bright for them.”

With Mourinho reported to return to West London, they could splash a little more than they otherwise would. Benitez has already stated the club are likely to spend €100 million on three or four more players.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas thinks that adding a couple of high-class players and Mourinho to Chelsea’s current set-up will make them title favorites next year.

Villas-Boas said:

“I think Chelsea will be absolutely the team to beat next year, bearing in mind the manager we expect to come in and the strengthening of a very good squad.”

Chelsea do have work to do to regain the title they last won three years ago, but the aforementioned changes might get them there. That season they finished with 86 points — 11 more than this year. Key additions of Mourinho and a couple of players could be the difference, with Manchester United and Manchester City both with new managers in the upcoming campaign.
