Borussia Dortmund vs Real Madrid: Dortmund’s Keys to Victory

As German giants Bayern Munich took one huge step towards the UEFA Champions League final by beating Barcelona 4-0, it is now Borussia Dortmund’s time to do the same. The German team will have a tough task against a well managed Real Madrid side. Dortmund will play the first leg at home in a place where most visitors find it a very difficult task to even score a goal. Signal Iduna Park will be the loudest place in Germany guaranteed. However, the stadium might be hosting one of its superstars’ last games wearing the home jersey. Earlier in the week, it was reported that German international Mario Gotze will leave the team to join Dortmund’s rival Bayern Munich. The transfer is set to be the most expensive involving a German player as Bayern Munich will have to surrender 37 million Euros to Borussia Dortmund.
Ahead of match-day Real Madrid’s manager, Jose Mourinho, revealed his side’s starting eleven.

  • Diego Lopez; Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao; Sami Khedira, Xabi Alonso;  Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut (Ozil), Di Maria; Higuain.

With the given Real Madrid lineup, Borussia Dortmund should attack the Merengues’ left side of the pitch. Their keys to victory will be more simply said than done:

  • Attacking Real Madrid through Fabio Coentrao’s side:

Fabio Coentrao might be regarded as one of the top left backs in the world, but he is no Marcelo. He has seen limited playing time this year because of injuries or when Marcelo has been cleared to play. Dortmund should try to use Reus and Gotze in this side because combining these two skillful players might draw attention from Pepe and open up space through the middle. Attacking Real’s right side will be difficult as they will face one of Europe’s and world’s premier defender in Ramos and one of the current best central defenders in Varane.

  • Shadow and Contain Cristiano throughout the whole match:

Cristiano Ronaldo is easily one of the best and most athletic players in the world. He possesses a thunderous shot, blazing fast speed, and high level skills. Stopping him won’t be as easy as some might think. Dortmund should have one player always shadowing him from midfield on. As he moves from the midfield line, Goetze should try to rough him up a little bit.  Once he enters Dortmund’s third of the field, it will be Gündoğan’s or Bender’s time to play physical with Cristiano and maybe foul him from time to time and stay with him until Dortmund recovers possession. Making Real Madrid play without Cristiano will enhance Dortmund’s chances of winning the match even more.

  • Nuri Sahin and home-field advantage:

Nuri Sahin couldn’t have arrived to Dormund at a better time. The former Real Madrid man will have an incredible amount of insight for his team as he has already played for Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho. The player might serve this match as Klopp’s right hand. Dortmund should also feel more comfortable and home and try to take advantage of the great home-field advantage they always have in Germany as it will not be an easy task to go to Madrid and try to steal a result there (not saying its impossible).

  • Long Shots:

If infiltrating into Real Madrid’s box becomes harder and harder, Dortmund will have to start taking long shots from outside. The German side has a lot of talent in their midfield should they have to resort to this tactic. Gündoğan, Reus, and Gotze all possess incredible technique from outside the box.

Prediction: 2-2
