A television station in Spain, La Sexta, has reported that Colombian superstar Falcao, the man widely considered as the world’s best true striker, will move to French club AS Monaco for a staggering fee of €60 million. Falcao has been linked with a move away from Atletico Madrid for what seems like an eternity with Chelsea or Manchester City the seemingly probable destinations but if reports are true, the South American hitman has preferred a move to nouveau rich Monaco who are set to be promoted to Ligue 1.

It’s truly an odd story: one of the world’s best players has preferred a move to a newly promoted club, spurning interest from some of the world’s biggest clubs. Owner Dmitry Rybolovlev is looking to return Monaco to its past glory by investing heavily in the squad. Rybolovlev convinced veteran tactician Claudio Ranieri to sign on as boss of his club and made one big signing since taking over, a £9.68 million move for Argentinian wunderkind Lucas Ocampos.

Falcao is somewhat used to being a big fish in a little pond which makes the proposed move to the French club somewhat unsurprising. At Porto, he was absolutely prolific, linking up with Hulk and James Rodriguez to form one of the most exciting attacking triumvirates in world football. When he decided it was time to leave Porto, he chose a move to Atletico Madrid, who were looking to replace the newly departed Sergio Aguero. While Atletico Madrid are a fantastic club in their own right, much bigger clubs including Real Madrid and the aforementioned duo of English giants were linked with the Colombian number nine. Madrid, Chelsea and City would all been able to pay him more and he would be joining a club that would be competing both domestically and in Europe’s premier club competition for the foreseeable feature.

Should the rumors be true, Ligue 1 is receiving a huge boost. The French top flight is widely considered to be the world’s fifth best league, after the English Premier League, German Bundesliga, Spanish La Liga and Italian Serie A. French club PSG burst on to the scene after being taken over by the Qatar Investment Authority and the new owners splashed the cash, securing stars like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Thiago Silva and supremely talented youngsters such as Lucas Moura and Marco Verratti. Ligue 1 stalwarts Marseille and Lyon are still playing well domestically but both clubs are virtually irrelevant in
