Arsenal vs Wigan: Predicated Starting Lineup For the Gunners

>

Arsenal host Wigan tonight in a match that will certainly result in having massive consequence for one or both teams depending on the result. Wigan are coming fresh off an FA Cup Final triumph but will have to postpone celebrations as they look to avoid relegation again. After having defeated Manchester City at Wembley and essentially forcing the sacking of Roberto Mancini, the Latics will have to defeat another team aiming for Champions League ambition if they are to really have a chance at Premier League survival.

Similarly, Arsenal will be looking to go for it due to this past weekend’s results. Both Chelsea and Tottenham were victorious away from home – the former at Aston Villa that saw Frank Lampard become Chelsea’s all-time leading goal-scorer, and the latter at Stoke in a game that saw Spurs fight back from a one-goal deficit.

With this in mind, Arsenal will have to combine a mix of defensive astuteness with a cutting edge. Wojciech Szczesny will most likely get the start in goal and has enjoyed a return form in recent weeks. The Polish goalkeeper was seemingly uncontested between the posts at the Emirates before Lukas Fabianski seemingly revived his Arsenal career just a few weeks back.

In defense, Wenger will look to Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as the core of his guard. Captain Thomas Vermaelen will likely miss out again, which will further raise questions about his Arsenal future. On the left hand side, Wenger will go with Nacho Monreal. Both he and Bacary Sagna will need to make sure they are aware of Wigan’s attack down the flanks. The pair may have to play a bit subdued as Wigan enjoy countering and taking advantage of wider areas.

In the midfield, Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey will have the job of holding down the defensive areas just in front of the back four. Wigan enjoy a physical game, and these two will have to be switched on to both attacks directed through the middle as well as those played down the flanks. Late runners will need to be tracked.

Theo Walcott, Tomas Rosicky, and Santi Cazorla will make up the attacking portion of the midfield with Walcott and Cazorla operating in the wider areas. Tomas Rosicky can take the creative reigns in the middle and look to bring them as well as Lukas Podolski into the play. The German could start as the lone striker as Arsenal look to secure a vital win at home.

Arsenal vs Wigan Predicted Lineup
Arsenal (4-2-3-1): Szczesny (GK); Sagna, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Monreal; Arteta, Ramsey; Walcott, Rosicky, Cazorla; Podolski.
