Arsenal News: Laurent Koscielny Talks Injuries, Duels, and the Champions League

>

Laurent Koscielny has played an interesting role in Arsenal’s season this year, having to fight for his place in a back line that features captain Thomas Vermaelen and German international Per Mertasacker. The French international has had to fight several little injuries and has done well to solidify his spot in an Arsenal team that has secured 16 out of 18 points out of their last six matches.

Koscielny has played a vital part in Arsenal’s defensive responsibilities as the North London club seek another year of Champions League football. Speaking to Arsenal.com, the Frenchman discussed his love of a good battle with opposition strikers.

“I need to have duels and win them. It’s better for my game because I am more confident, I can take little risks with passes and feel better and better during the game.

“The boss is right with this. Now it’s up to me to keep this all the time.

“I’m in a good position because I’m fit and I’m confident. I think every player wants to finish high up in the table. I will give everything for the squad to finish in the Champions League places.”

The defender went on to discuss the injuries that have slowed his season down slightly here and there. Though his start and stop season has been more of an annoyance than anything, he’s shown with this current form that he’s more than capable of holding down a starting spot in the Arsenal back four.

“When you are injured, it’s very difficult because you need time to be fit,” he said. “I needed to come back and play a lot of times to be fit and confident on the pitch.

“It was difficult but it’s good for my career and my body. I think it can help me for the next season and for more years.”

Arsenal fans, are you happy with the progress that Koscielny has shown this year? Despite being a relative unknown when he signed several years ago, he’s shown that he’s able to deal with the Premier League’s pace and physical side. Would you rather see your captain, Vermaelen, starting than Koscieleny or are you happy with the way things are going at the moment? Have your say below.

    Koscielny over Vermaelen. Definitely.

Vermaelen’s looked below par since about midway last season, we’ve only stuck with him because Mertesacker was out for the season after Sunderland(A) last season and because he became captain this season.
Kudos to Wenger for finally showing some ruthlessness.

Mertesacker and Koscielny have a good partnership going on. I wouldn’t want to disrupt that.
