Manchester United and Chelsea Keen on Dutch Starlet Marco van Ginkel

As David Moyes and Jose Mourinho take over Manchester United and Chelsea respectively, the two tacticians are beginning to target a number of players that will fit their style of football. One such player that has piqued the interest of both clubs is Vitesse midfielder Marco van Ginkel.

Manchester United have been chasing a new central midfielder for some time now, including van Ginkel’s compatriot Kevin Strootman. With Paul Scholes retired, Anderson never really settling in at Old Trafford, Ryan Giggs with one year left on his contract and at age 39, bringing in a gifted youngster like van Ginkel to develop would be beneficial.

Two other options to partner Michael Carrick, who was fantastic last season, are Phil Jones and Tom Cleverley. Jones has been fielded in the centre of the pitch before, but his future role looks to be Rio Ferdinand’s successor at centre-back. Cleverley made 22 appearances last season, but failed to really cement his spot in the middle of the park, perhaps inclining Moyes to explore other options.

Jose Mourinho is a huge proponent of the 4-2-3-1 and while he is spoiled for options when it comes to the three advanced midfielders, Chelsea may need another midfield pivot for the future. The Blues currently have John Obi Mikel, Ramires, Frank Lampard, Michael Essien and Oriol Romeu capable of playing the position.

Mikel has yearned to play his natural No. 10 role for years, but hasn’t been given the chance and recent interest from Galatasaray could see the talented Nigerian leave Stamford Bridge this summer. Oriol Romeu has shown considerable promise in the past, but given the exit of Roberto Di Matteo, who selected Romeu quite often, and a season-ending injury, Romeu’s substitute role is primed to pipped.

Ramires and Lampard will be likely starters as the “2″ in Mourinho’s and Europe’s favored formation and while that is a formidable duo, Lampard is 34 and only has a contract through next season. He’s still got some top class football left in him, but Mourinho could feel the time is now to find Lampard’s successor.

The Special One is a big fan of Michael Essien, getting the dynamic Ghanaian on loan during his time at Real Madrid. Essien will undoubtedly play a role under Mourinho, yet with just two years left on his contract, that one-year mark where a player is either sold or extended is coming up, so there’s no guarantee Essien will be around for much longer.

The 20-year-old van Ginkel, who was part of a Dutch team that just lost in the UEFA Under-21 Euro Semifinals, would be a valuable addition to either team. He started his career as an attacking midfielder, however he has recently been successful as a central midfielder. His stamina and work-rate have allowed him to flourish in a box-to-box type role and his penchant for making the right pass have made him indispensable to Vitesse.

He’s not a flashy midfielder who will try to use tricks to get past markers, rather he utilizes great awareness, composure and passing range to orchestrate the flow of play. In 33 Eredivisie appearances this season, van Ginkel scored eight goals and provided 10 assists. While his technical skills are top notch, he will need to add some muscle in order to physically compete in the Premier League. Aside from that, he looks to have all the tools to become a star.

The Daily Mail report states a figure of £15 million could be enough to pry the gifted Dutchman away from Vitesse. At 20 years old, either club could elect to loan out van Ginkel in order to get him some experience in English football as he could still be a little too green to be thrust into a large role at such a big club.

With Carrick, Anderson, Jones, Cleverley and Giggs, David Moyes will have a reliable midfield for the coming season and wouldn’t necessarily need van Ginkel at the moment. The same can be said for Chelsea as with Romeu, Essien, Lampard, Ramires, Mikel and even David Luiz who has moonlighted as a holding midfielder, Mourinho will have a number of options to try until he finds his ideal pairing.

Marco van Ginkel is a classy midfielder and could represent the future at the position for either Manchester United or Chelsea should either one of these footballing giants seal a deal for the Netherlands international.
