Darren Bent Transfer: Newcastle and Hull City battle for Aston Villa outcast

Darren Bent proved to be an expensive pass around striker in the English Premier League between 2005 and 2011 as he spent two seasons with Chartlon, Tottenham and one and a half with Sunderland before his record move to Aston Villa for a deal that could potentially rise to £24 million.

All together between his moves to Tottenham, Sunderland and Villa in just under six seasons over £50 million was swapped around the league for the England international.

His best from showing from 2008-11 where he scored 62 goals from 43 appearances for Tottenham, 63 for Sunderland and 16 for Aston Villa.

However, after 2011 injuries and poor form began to plagued the player, as well as frustration between multiple managers at Villa not having a handle on what their direction was going to be in regard to the now 29-year-old

After 23 appearances and only six goals this past season under Paul Lambert it looks like Bent is going back on the auction block. According to the Daily Mirror he is a target for both Newcastle United and Hull City.

While financially Newcastle are the most likely candidate to have the cash to afford him, Steven Bruce at Hull City could have the edge because of having put faith in the player to come to Sunderland from Tottenham years before.

Either way, he is not likely to garner Aston Villa anywhere near the £20 million they shelled out for him.  The Mirror reports that Villa are willing to let Bent go for only £6 million, and Hull manager Bruce already is believed to have claimed, according to a source, that his side are more than willing to meet that price:

“Hull certainly wouldn’t baulk at meeting Villa’s asking price for Darren. When Steve Bruce was appointed Sunderland manager four years ago, he made Bent his first signing and he rates him very highly.

Steve was bitterly disappointed when Darren decided to leave Wearside for Villa because he really felt the club and player were perfect for each other and could go places together.

Hull know they need to boost their fire-power going into the top flight, and Brucey would love to bring Darren to Humberside.”

The real issue is going to be the expectation of Bent to take a pay cut from the current £70,000-per-week he is currently making at Villa.

  1. You say Darren Bent scored 62 goals from 43 appearances with Tottenham? It’s a wonder that Spurs didn’t quadruple his pay rather than benching him and then dumping him…
