Chelsea Set Sights on Manchester United Star
It was not long ago that Wayne Rooney was considered as one of the untouchables at Manchester United so much so that the club had to break its record wage levels to keep the player. Rooney signed a contract worth around £220,000 per week a few years ago after threatening to leave the club. Now, it seems that United will be more than happy to receive a bid for the player. According to the Express, the Premier league leaders would be interested in listening to offers for the player. As he has only two years left on his contract, United value him at around £30 million.
Rumours about his impending departure from United have kicked off after the striker was left out of the starting line up against Real Madrid. This is not the first time he has been dropped from a big match this season. Rooney had to face several criticisms about his fitness during the early part of the campaign.
He showed signs of recovery during the Christmas period, but his appetite for football and form have led to the manager dropping him on numerous occasions recently.
This has alerted big spenders like Manchester City, Paris St Germain, and Chelsea. The Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti was in charge of Chelsea when Rooney was previously available. Chelsea are thought to have made several enquiries back then about the possibility of bringing Rooney. United, though, were desperate to keep Rooney, but the tables have turned this time around.
The former United striker Michael Owen has said that Rooney’s United future looks bleak. He has recalled how Ferguson has employed Rooney in a number of positions even if he did not play as a striker. Rooney has scored 11 goals in 20 matches this season, but he has been overshadowed by van Persie’s return of 19 goals in 28 matches.
