Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Top Five Targets for the Gunners

After narrowly finishing in fourth and still without a trophy since their FA Cup victory in 2005, the Arsenal brass has given coach Arsene Wenger a transfer kitty of £70 million, in an attempt to bolster the squad ahead of the coming Premier League season. Though they have to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the Gunners remain an attractive destination across Europe and have been linked with some huge names of late as Wenger looks primed to make impactful signings.

Let’s take a look at five players who’ve been linked with a move to the Emirates and analyze how they’d fit into the squad.

Stevan Jovetic, Fiorentina

Fiorentina’s 23-year-old Montenegrin striker has been heavily linked with a move away from la Viola with Arsenal and Juventus rumored to be suitors. Fiorentina have demanded a cash-only deal for the player known as JoJo, trying to squeeze every penny out of their prized player, whilst Juve are keen to offer some cash, a co-ownership deal for promising defensive midfielder Luca Marrone and full ownership of veteran striker Fabio Quagliarella.

This is where things get a little complicated- Jovetic’s agent stated he prefers to stay in Italy though Juve’s offer does not seem to tickle Fiorentina’s fancy. Arsenal are readying a cash-only bid for Jovetic, but their £20 million bid falls short of Fiorentina’s £25 million valuation.

If there’s one area where the Gunners need improvements, it’s at the striker position. Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud haven’t really done enough to show that either of them is the right man for the job going forward and Wenger continues to deny Theo Walcott his favored centre-forward role. Jovetic’s goal totals are solid- 26 goals in 62 appearances over the past two seasons- and his ability to link up with teammates makes him a very dangerous forward.

He’s capable of finishing from anywhere inside the box and isn’t afraid of shooting from distance. He’s capable in the air, but the reason that he’s a perfect fit for Arsenal is his passing and penchant for link-up play. Arsenal are at their best when the ball is being distributed well and inserting Jovetic into the centre-forward role at The Emirates could make Arsenal’s offense explode.

Arsene Wenger will have to raise his bid if he wants to see Jovetic in red and white next season and although a Jovetic signing would be the richest in Arsenal’s history, the Fiorentina front-man has shown all the skill to turn into a world-beater in the next few seasons.
