Five Goalkeeping Candidates to Replace Simon Mignolet at Sunderland

According to recent reports, the most recent of which coming from BBC Sport, Simon Mignolet would appear to be edging closer to the Stadium of Light exit in favour of a move to Liverpool.

Last season was arguably the Belgian international’s finest in the Premier League, and with the opportunity of joining the Anfield outfit now on the table, goalkeeper would appear to be the next spot in need of filling for the Black Cats.

Paolo Di Canio has already begun to ring the changes in the northeast, releasing several players and quickly signing several free agents Cabral, Valentin Roberge and Modibo Diakite.

If Mignolet were to leave Sunderland this summer, the following five shot-stoppers could all have a chance at filling the club’s No.1 void.

5. Ross Turnbull

Currently a free agent following the expiration of his Chelsea contract, Ross Turnbull begins his search for a new club and Sunderland just happen to be looking.

Not to be under any illusions, Turnbull is most definitely not a Chelsea-standard goalkeeper and has played just 28 times in four seasons at the club across all competitions, and that’s including games with the reserves.

Averaging a little over six matches per season, the former Middlesbrough stopper does, however, have some degree of talent and has been understudy to Petr Cech in that time, surely worth some value at least.

Given that Turnbulll is still just 28 years old, he could be a savvy free transfer and is of course not foreign to the area having been born just an hour away from the Stadium of Light.

  1. Let Westwood step up. He was Eire’s no 1 before Mignolet established himself at Sunderland. Save th cash and invst elsewhere. Forster would be 2nd option.

Agreed Stuart. Give Westwood a chance, or try and get Forster. 3 of those listed are way past their best and Turnbull is a joke. Otherwise I could see them going for a player like McCarthy from Reading.
